deep tan are one of TMR’s favourite bands at the moment. ‘diamond horsetail’ is their latest single, and also happens to be the title track of their current EP, which is out now via Practice Music. It’s a subversive piece of post-punk that allows angular guitar lines to collide with sharp vocal lines. An intentionally thin texture is created by the restrained drums and bass line, allowing the lyrics to take centre stage. On the accompanying music video, director sweatmother says: “There’s power in direct eye contact, and subverting the traditional gaze back on itself, the gaze in this work is directly breaking the fourth wall on purpose while cementing the agency in the power to return the gaze or to look back?”.
